"The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell." ~ Zora Nea

These are only the casual observations of a laywoman but I spend most of my time at home outside with this brood and the changes so far have been completely remarkable. I came back from work to find them there, four little laying hens scratting about in the mist then scattering from my shadow. Their home farm had been a Happy Egg Co. supplier who was (as usual) sending their entire flock of 8 month old girls to slaughter save for these few. I only wish we could have taken them all. Please allow me to introduce you to the new ladies in my life: Amelia Eggheart, Chick Norris, Henjamin Zephaniah and Princess Layer. I delight in the addition of their chortles to my mornings and the exchange of pleasantries with these tiny dinosaurs through the steam of my first brew.

Then they get me wondering how crestfallen chickens could ever produce happy eggs? Perhaps more to the point, why would anyone risk exploiting another being when their eggs are not in any way fundamental to a humans good health? I struggle on a pretty regular basis knowing that none of this needs to happen but for now I chirrup back to my girls that they are safe and loved and free.
