Channelling the spirit of Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment I tried to stealthily negotiate the trip wires all the spiders had set for me since my last visit but was fooling no one. It hung there unflinchingly from its thread, seemingly waiting for me to swiftly and silently remove myself from its personal space but this was not that day. Had it been willing me to get webbed in the face, snag my backpack on a bramble, lose my footing on damp decking, go down like a jellyfish and and up covered in mud then bingo. My eyes land unintentionally back on her and there is a moment’s pause before she turns to climb away in which it felt an awful lot like the comedically sardonic pause for effect of someone who – eyebrow raised - is less than impressed.
In a some Hopi creation myths Spider Woman is an earth goddess, weaver of life, a great teacher, protector and Mother of all creation. She is overseer of those in needs so I feel it’s best if she’s close even if it's just to have a laugh at me and perhaps preferable I take a little time to honour the abounding acceptance of my presence in her space.
